Thursday, June 18, 2026 – “Silent Meal Day”

“A meal without words to understand those who swallow with courage.”

Purpose: To make people feel, without speaking, what it means to eat with vigilance, slowness, and concentration.

Concept: A day where the meal is taken in complete silence—no conversation, no phone, no distractions.

Each participant is invited to experience the meal as a person with dysphagia would: attentive to every bite, aware of the act of swallowing, focused on safety and texture.

“Today, we eat to understand, not to talk.”

Silent Meal Guidelines

Eat whatever you want, slowly (30–45 minutes), aiming for about 20 chews per bite.

• Soft atmosphere: dim lighting, calm music, or complete silence.

• Each participant eats slowly, mindfully, and with full attention.

Sharing Moment (after the meal)

  • Participants write one sentence about what they felt: fear, slowness, gratitude, frustration, calm…
  • These reflections can be displayed or shared on social media.

Objectives

  • Raise awareness about the concentration and vigilance required to swallow safely.
  •  Help people feel the solitude or tension some experience at every meal.
  • Create a space for empathy and collective reflection.

Possible Variations

  • Group version: a silent community meal in a cafeteria or community center.
  • Individual version: each person does it at home, then shares a photo and a sentence at dysphagiecanada@gmail.com.
